KINGSTON PAST

gardens

The statue, by Edward Hodges Baily, is of Sir Charles Metcalfe, Governor of Jamaica

(1839-42), and had formerly stood in the centre of the Parade in Spanish Town; it was

moved to Kingston, newly designated the capital of the island, during the regime of Sir

John Peter Grant (1866-73), much to the dismay of the citizens of the old capital.
