victoria park
Daily Gleaner, September 11, 1893
We learn that a project is being mooted in this city for the purpose of constructing a cinder path for the holding of athletic sports, bicycle races, &c. A fine site has been procured at Lara's pen on the Windward Road and subscriptions are flowing steadily in to Mr. Lambdin, of the Telephone Coy. who has the matter in hand.
Above we publish a unique photograph of the start of a cycle race, taken
at what was then known as Victoria Park on the 1st of January 1897.
Victoria Park was formerly known as Lara's Pen off the Windward Road,
and is now known as Newton Square.
. . . a cycling club was formed known as the "Victoria Cycle Club" about
the time of the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria; Lara's Pen on the
Windward Road was acquired and a cinder banked track and a club
pavilion built. As a consequence meets became frequent and in addition
to club events open events were also on the programme for non-
members to participate in.'
